Word of the day: משחק - game

27 September 2016

The גְּבִיעַ הָאַלּוּפוֹת gvia ha-alufot "Champions League" is in full swing! A couple of words that may be relevant:

First off, לְשַׂחֵק lesachek means "to play". Both in the sense "to play a game" and "to play on stage, in a film, etc". A game is מִשְׂחָק mischak. A player will be שַׂחְקָן sachkan; the same word means "actor". The female counterpart is שַׂחְקָנִית sachkanit.

"Football" is כַּדּוּרֶגֶל kaduregel, from כַּדּוּר kadur "ball" and רֶגֶל regel "leg, foot".

בּוֹאוּ נְשַׂחֵק כַּדּוּרֶגֶל מָחָר בַּבּוֹקֶר!
Bo'u nesachek kaduregel machar ba-boker!
Let's play football tomorrow in the morning!

(You may want to see the explanation about בואו in one of our previous articles.)

A football player is כַּדּוּרַגְלָן kaduraglan or שַׁחְקָן כַּדּוּרֶגֶל sachkan kaduregel.

Diego Maradona nechshav be-einei rabim la-kaduraglan ha-tov be-yoter be-chol ha-zmanim.
Diego Maradona is considered by many (lit.: in the eyes of many) [to be (lit.: to)] the best football player of all times.

A football field, or pitch, is מִגְרָשׁ migrash. Listen to the song מֶלֶךְ הַמִּגְרָשׁ melech ha-migrash "King of the Field" by אייל גולן Eyal Golan:

We will write more about football later on. If you want to have some specific words covered, please don't hesitate to comment!
