Word of the day: שטרודל - the @ sign

24 March 2018

A Strudel.

This article was contributed by Anastasia Golovina.

When I started learning Hebrew, I heard people mentioning to me some strudel every time they spelled out their emails. After some time, I realized that in Spoken Hebrew שִׁטְרוּדֶל shitrudel means the "at symbol" (@) because of its visual resemblance to a cross-section cut of a strudel cake.

Please pay attention that you can also hear the word כְּרוּכִית kruchit, which is another word for "strudel". It is the officially recommended word invented by the Academy of the Hebrew Language based on the root כ־ר־ך with the general meaning "to wrap, to bind", but it is rarely used.
